ZEN LINEAGE

CENTURIES IN THE MAKING

The source of my teaching

As with almost all mindfulness practices the principal source of these teachings is Zen.

I am privileged to have been taught by Julian Daizan Skinner; the first Englishman to go to Japan and become a Roshi or Zen Master in the rigorous Rinzai tradition of Zen. In 2003, Daizan began training with Rinzai Zen Master Shinzan Miyamae Rōshi of Gyokuryuji Temple in Gifu, central Japan. The temple was the former hermitage of the outstanding Rinzai Zen reformer Bankei Yōtaku Zenji (1622–1693). Shinzan Rōshi, something of a maverick in the modern Zen world, intended the tiny temple to provide a basis of true Zen training.

Over many years of strict training, in Japan and the west, Daizan Roshi received Dharma Transmission and permission to teach in both the Rinzai and Soto lineages of Zen, returned to England and founded Zenways. He has served as a resident teacher at the Buddhist Society in London and is an appointed trainer with the College of Mindful Clinicians. He has been involved in Zen teaching at Oxford University and is particularly involved in the “Managing Your Mind” programme of postdoctoral study.
